Carya Ovata

also known as Shagbark Hickory!
Our mountains are full of em.  Well, right now, if you go check around, you may find a healthy number of green and brown scented nuts in the forest.  These delightful treats not only mean good wood for a handle is nearby, great firewood lurks next to you, salt is stored in twigs for emergency just above, but that you have a healthy, protein rich, fat inclusive snack right at your feet.  Look up the hickory if you don't know it already and get out there!  We may not have the chestnut anymore, and those Oaks can be a little bitter, but the hickory nut is sweet and pleasant.  Get em now while you can.
