first day SCII Land

Awesome.  We were swimming the river woried about the rain. Then it started raining.  So we kept swimming.  The moment when the three of us leaped out into space from this HUGE tree at the same time and came up in pouring rain, and it was ok, was the best.  I mean, you're already in the water right?  The big trip starts soon, say a prayer for us! :)

the Firefly gathering ROCKED

Usually each year I sort of visit the Firefly gathering too quickly, in and out, seeing familiar faces talking a bit and then getting about my business.  This year I was able to eke out an evening, actually spend the night.  What I witnessed, I believe, was the real beauty - or should a say, a NEW beauty that I haven't experienced much.  As I walked around the campus in the shadows I heard kids laughing, music playing, drums thundering, fires crackling, insects in the distance, raucous arm wrestling at the campus fire and even swimmers out in the moonlit lake.  The conversations I overhead were highly engaging, enlightening, challenging.  There were amiable debates, discussions of Chaos theory, and the ever present thirst for knowledge about the ways of our planet, the foods, the critters, the crafts, the lore.  As I stood on the softly lit dock protruding out in to the deep water, I couldn't resist the pull of the moon and the soothing water.  Jumping off of the high dive into black space and then surfacing to shimmering reflections of that distant orb we know so all seemed a little different.  The men stepped up throughout the event and the women were impressive all around.  Many friends said farewell until next time, whatever that may be, and I think we all left with much more than some skills and new information.  Thank you to participants, teachers, organizers and volunteers!  And yes, you do need an NC fishing license anytime you are on the water, fishing.
